Historic Palace with a New Interior Design Concept

Located in the heart of Vienna’s 9th district, the Hotel Palais Chotek has transformed a historic 19th-century Viennese palace into an elegant hideaway. The landmark-protected building has a long history and was closely associated for decades with Vienna’s furniture-making tradition and the Friedrich Otto Schmidt workshop. Today, the property, with its 164 rooms and suites, presents itself as a stylish hotel that combines historic architecture with contemporary interiors. Scheucher was able to make a significant contribution to this with 5,000 m² of herringbone parquet flooring.

Insights into the Project: Statement by Lukas Koller, MSc., Managing Director

We would like to extend our special thanks to Mr. Lukas Koller, MSc., Managing Director of the Hotel Palais Chotek, for his insights and the development of the project, as well as his support with this article. We would like to share his perspective on the project here:

“During the development of the Hotel Palais Chotek, it was important to us to use materials that do justice to the historic character of the building while also meeting the demands of a modern hotel operation. Scheucher impressed us with their high level of technical expertise, flexibility, and a very good understanding of the special requirements of a property with high guest traffic. Especially with a parquet floor in a hotel, durability, ease of maintenance, and resilience are just as important as aesthetics. The result blends very harmoniously into the architecture and interior design of the Palais Chotek and contributes significantly to the warm, elegant atmosphere of the property.”

A timeless atmosphere with herringbone parquet flooring in the heart of Vienna

The rooms and suites consistently reflect the hotel’s design signature. High-quality materials, exquisite furnishings, and classic parquet floors create a harmonious overall look that blends the historic character of the palace with contemporary comfort. Using various herringbone parquet solutions from Scheucher, the EST Hotel Palais Chotek achieved a cohesive design concept tailored to the different areas of the hotel.

5,000 m² of Scheucher herringbone parquet for guest rooms and suites

The flooring plays a key role throughout the interior concept of the hotel. In total, approximately 5,000 m² of Scheucher herringbone parquet was installed.

In the guest rooms and suites, Bilaflor 500 Strip in Oak Natur Valletta Akzent was selected, installed without bevels and finished with the TENSEO X-Matt lacquered surface.

Flooring has a significant influence on the character of a space, particularly in historic buildings. Historic palaces and buildings of this period are often associated with classic herringbone parquet – a pattern that has been part of representative architecture for centuries.

At Palais Chotek, the herringbone installation reflects this architectural heritage while translating it into a contemporary interior concept. The bevel-free execution creates a calm and continuous surface appearance, enhancing the sense of space throughout the rooms.

The grading, colour variation and texture of Oak Natur Valletta Akzent add warmth and natural character while maintaining the elegant appearance associated with traditional parquet flooring.

Parquet with TENSEO X-Matt finish: Designed for the demands of hotel environments

In the hospitality sector, flooring is among the most heavily used surfaces within a building. Public areas with high foot traffic, luggage movement, continuous guest circulation and daily cleaning routines place significantly higher demands on flooring than typical residential applications. Alongside the visual appearance of parquet, durability, ease of maintenance and long-term performance therefore become key considerations.

For Hotel Palais Chotek, Scheucher’s TENSEO X-Matt finish was selected. The ultra-matt surface enhances the natural appearance of the wood while creating a calm visual effect, without the roller texture often associated with conventional matt lacquer finishes.

The finish also offers practical advantages for day-to-day hotel operations. Its water- and dirt-repellent properties support easy cleaning and reduce maintenance requirements – an important aspect in heavily frequented areas. In addition, the anti-footprint effect minimises visible marks, helping the flooring maintain its appearance even under intensive use.

Beyond its visual qualities, the surface is designed for demanding applications and combines durability with the natural look and feel of real wood flooring.

In addition, the surface offers excellent scratch and abrasion resistance as well as high chemical resistance, making it suitable for demanding commercial applications. Its compliance with the requirements for commercial use according to ÖNORM C2354 further underlines its suitability for high-traffic environments. Reduced UV-related colour change also helps preserve the original appearance of the parquet over time.

Despite its durability, the key advantage of a real wood floor remains unchanged: the parquet can be sanded and refinished when required, supporting long-term use and lifecycle value. In addition, the finish is solvent-free and contributes to a healthy indoor environment.

Further information and all benefits of the TENSEO X-Matt finish can be found on the product page.

Multiflor.11 700 herringbone parquet in the bar and conference area of the Hotel Palais Chotek

In addition to the guest rooms, the public areas were also individually designed. In the bar and conference area, another Scheucher herringbone parquet — Multiflor.11 700 in  Oak knotty steamed Valletta Seda Akzent—was used.

The impact of this material concept is particularly evident in the bar area. Historic wooden ceilings, natural stone surfaces, brass details, and the deep green and blue tones of the interior are complemented by the steamed herringbone parquet, coming together to form a harmonious overall look.

The parquet contributes significantly to the atmosphere of the room and connects historic elements with the hotel’s modern design.
