A real wood floor in the kitchen, will it stand up to it?

FAQ Current

The kitchen is increasingly becoming the center of life in every home. It's no longer just a place for cooking, washing up and serving food - no, a kitchen is the place to be. People enjoy spending time together with friends and family and this also has an impact on the interior design - colors, materials and the location of the kitchen are becoming increasingly important.

Generally speaking, rooms are merging with each other these days, are designed to be open, and people naturally want smooth transitions between the individual living areas.

A real parquet floor in the kitchen, will it stand up to it?

Wood and therefore parquet is a warm material and, quite simply, it is more comfortable to stand and walk on than many other floor coverings. Building owners are also opting for natural, durable and healthy materials such as parquet flooring due to increasing health and environmental awareness. The diverse selection and installation options of a wooden floor further reinforce this decision.

Just as outdated as the kitchen as a means to an end is the view that a parquet floor belongs exclusively as a representative floor in the living room. However, many people are concerned about whether it is also suitable for demanding areas such as the kitchen - after all, the floor has to withstand a lot more here.

So does parquet flooring make sense here from a long-term perspective?

Don't worry - a parquet floor is not only robust, but also more hygienic and easier to care for than you might think, because wood as a raw material is already naturally used to a lot and is additionally protected by Scheucher with the excellent surface treatments SEDA, PUROtec and TENSEO. With a few tips, your parquet floor will therefore remain beautiful for a long time, even in the kitchen.

Wood is alive! In general, a parquet floor absorbs moisture such as water vapor from our cooking pots and releases it again when the air is dry - wood is therefore hygroscopic - it adapts to the moisture content of its surroundings. This natural process is also known as the working of wood - i.e. swelling and shrinking. If the humidity is above 65% (in the summer months) or below 30% (in the heating period), this can lead to noticeable dimensional changes in the parquet elements - this is completely normal. Nevertheless, as in all rooms, you should keep an eye on the existing humidity - long-term deviations can lead to health problems and undesirable changes in the appearance of the parquet.

Particularly hygienic despite requiring little cleaning

In order to preserve the perfect appearance of a parquet floor for decades, it should be exposed to as little direct moisture as possible, so it is important to remember to wipe up spilled liquids as quickly as possible - these are always noticed on the spot and are usually wiped up quickly on any other floor covering. This also applies to cleaning. For parquet flooring, dry cleaning with a vacuum cleaner or a soft-hair broom is generally sufficient. Damp mopping is only necessary if required. Likewise, a floor surface laid with parquet has no joints as is the case with tiles, for example, where food residues and dirt can accumulate even more easily.

In the kitchen, we work with food and we want a hygienic environment for our family.

Our parquet has a natural antistatic effect and is allergy-friendly, as it does not attract dust, germs or mites - another plus point in terms of hygiene. Thanks to its ability to balance out differences in humidity and absorb harmful substances in the air, parquet improves the air quality in the room. In contrast, parquet can even be disinfected if necessary, read more about this in this blog article.

In conclusion, parquet in the kitchen can be a unique and wonderfully practical option when the right finish is chosen for you.

Our ready-to-live-in oiled/waxed SEDA surface, for example, stands for extremely good water stain resistance and therefore gives us more time to remove spilled or dripped liquids. Mistakes are human, but they can always happen - if a stain, various scratches or damage are no longer visible one day, partial repairs can be carried out easily and without great effort thanks to the strong precious wood wear layer.

With our PUROtec surface innovation, on the other hand, you get an extremely scratch- and abrasion-resistant surface and excellent chemical resistance, while the matt lacquered surface is also practically maintenance-free and can of course be sanded and renovated if necessary.
